PARKERSBURG — An innovative advanced imaging technology that holds the promise of earlier and more accurate lung cancer diagnosis for patients is in use at WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center in Parkersburg.

Body Vision Medical’s C-Arm Based Tomography provides intraoperative CT imaging that enables pulmonologists to visualize the actual lung lesion and lesion location during a diagnostic bronchoscopy procedure so that they can confidently biopsy from smaller, more difficult-to-access lung lesions at an earlier stage.

This dramatically increases the likelihood of an early, definitive diagnosis for potential lung cancer patients, improving the probability of timely treatment and patient survival.

“We could not be more excited to offer this new service to our patients,” said Sean Smith, chief operations officer at Camden Clark.

“This technology enables us to transform lung imaging by increasing early detection. This procedure could ultimately lead to improved lung cancer-related mortality and better patient outcomes,” he said.

Intraoperative CT Imaging is a new standard in lung cancer diagnostics.

Pulmonologists are challenged to obtain diagnostic tissue from suspicious lung lesions because they are unable to see the lesion and lesion location during biopsy.

Body Vision’s intraoperative CT imaging enables pulmonologists to see the actual lesion and lesion location intraoperatively in real-time so they can precisely navigate to the lung lesion and visually confirm that they are indeed taking tissue samples from within the lesion during biopsy.

No other technology readily accessible to pulmonologists enables this kind of image-guided biopsy that has been clinically proven to maximize the likelihood of obtaining a conclusive diagnosis.

“We’re excited to now offer a very cost-effective solution that is a simple patient procedure and works seamlessly with the equipment I already use in the OR,” said Dr. Mathew Roshen, interventional pulmonologist at Camden Clark and the only Interventional Pulmonologist in the Mid-Ohio Valley region. “The flexibility of being able to adapt any tool in the equipment available to sample the lung lesion with advanced intraoperative CT imaging in 3D gives me confidence to sample the lesion for a definitive diagnosis.”

According to the American Lung Association, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States with an average five-year survival rate of only 18.6%.
