Clarke needed a birdie on the last hole to catch Broadhurst. Broadhurst posted a 4-under 66 to Clarke’s 69 at Gleneagles. Clarke steadied himself to stay in contention for another trophy. But Clarke and Broadhurst face a tough final round on Sunday with New Zealand’s Steven Alker and American Jerry Kelly only one shot back at 8 under.
A man accused of attacking New York GOP gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin during a recent campaign rally told investigators he’d been drinking that day and didn’t know who the congressman was. David Jakubonis's remarks are summarized in a federal criminal complaint filed Saturday. Jakubonis was scheduled to appear in court Saturday in Rochester to face a count of assaulting a member of Congress with a dangerous weapon. Authorities say Jakubonis told investigators he went onstage to ask the speaker if he was disrespecting veterans. Video shows Jakubonis raising his arm toward Zeldin as he holds a keychain. The two tussled to the ground and Zeldin suffered a minor scrape.

Kyle Busch faces an uncertain future after M&M Mars announced it would pull its marketing spend at the end of this season. The company has sponsored Busch since he joined Joe Gibbs Racing in 2008. The search for a new sponsor has dragged on and Busch has grown antsy waiting for a new deal. The 37-year-old Busch has 222 wins across NASCAR’s three national series and is the only active Cup driver with multiple championships. Busch also wants to keep his Kyle Busch Motorsports team alive in the Truck Series. He likely needs to stay with Toyota to keep the program alive.

When Disney reopens its Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique shops at resorts in Florida and California next month, the workers who help children dress up as their favorite animated characters will have new, more gender inclusive titles. The workers will be referred to as Fairy Godmother’s Apprentices instead of Fairy Godmothers-in-Training, as they were called before the shops closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique shops at Walt Disney World in Florida and Disneyland in California are scheduled to reopen at the end of August after being closed for two years. Workers at the shops provide hairstyling, makeup, costumes and accessories.

A Marine allegedly stabbed his pregnant ex-wife to death following an argument on a bustling Hawaii highway — even as passersby and commuters hopped out of their own vehicles and desperately tried to stop him.
Police say a suburban officer fatally shot a suspected drunken driver in Dallas after he refused to stop, fired a gun repeatedly at the officer and shot a bystander. Police in the west Dallas suburb of Bedford say the man fired at the officer who chased him into Dallas early Saturday. The man then stopped on a freeway and continued to fire, hitting a bystander before the officer fatally shot him. Police say the bystander was taken to a hospital in stable condition. Authorities have not named the driver or the bystander. Bedford police referred questions to Dallas police, who have not responded to a phone call seeking comment.
An active-duty U.S. Marine accused in the stabbing death of his wife is in custody and facing a second-degree murder charge. The Honolulu Police Department said Saturday that Bryant Tejeda-Castillo was being held on $1 million bail. Police say he was captured shortly after the Wednesday killing of 27-year-old Dana Alotaibi along a freeway. Police say he was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu with what one witness said were several self-inflicted wounds. A police spokesman didn't know if Tejeda-Castillo remained at the hospital on Saturday. Alotaibi’s friends say she was pregnant, but police say they are awaiting autopsy results.

A 70-year-old woman was stabbed by a 100-pound sailfish that leapt out of the water and attacked her as her companions were trying to reel it in on a boat near the Florida coast. The Martin County Sheriff's Office says the sailfish stabbed Katherine Perkins in the groin area with its pointed bill on Tuesday while she was standing in the boat as two others, Louis Toth and Dominic Bellezza, tried to bring the creature in on a fishing line about two miles offshore from Stuart, Florida. Toth and Bellezza applied pressure to the wound, and Perkins was taken to Stuart for medical treatment.

he state of Nevada posted record job numbers last month that show several key industries have risen above their pre-pandemic employment levels. The record of 1,452,600 jobs was 3,000 more than the previous peak in February 2020. Gov. Steve Sisolak said the state had recovered “all of the jobs that were lost during the COVID pandemic, and doing so in a way that has more Nevadans working in better-paying jobs than before the pandemic.” The state’s leisure and hospitality sector, which includes casinos, is still lagging behind at 90.7 percent of its pre-pandemic peak. But other industries have risen above their previous peaks to pull the rest of the state up.

The New York Mets have acquired catcher Michael Perez from Pittsburgh for cash. It was the second day in a row the NL East-leading Mets made a trade with the Pirates. The 29-year-old Perez was designated for assignment on Friday. A lefty hitter, he batted .150 with six home runs and 11 RBIs in 39 games and 107 at-bats this season. In parts of five seasons with the Pirates and Tampa Bay, he is hitting .175 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs. On Friday, the Mets got designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach from the Pirates for rookie reliever Colin Holderman.
Iran says its agents dismantled a group linked to the Israeli spy agency Mossad, which had allegedly planned terror operations inside Iran. State-run TV reported on Wednesday that members of the group had entered Iran from an unspecified neighboring country’s Kurdish-populated area. Both Turkey and Iraq have a minority Kurdish population living alongside the Iranian border. It said Iranian forces arrested all members of the group and confiscated a large amount of weapons, explosives, and technical and communication equipment belonging to the group in several operations across Iran. The TV also said the group planned “unprecedented terrorist operations” in “sensitive areas” — a likely reference to military and security installations. There was no immediate comment from Israel.

The protests Saturday followed record-smashing temperatures that scorched the U.K. earlier this week. Activist groups including Just Stop Oil and Insulate Britain led protesters in a sit-in on Parliament Square in London to demand that the Conservative government stop giving new licenses for oil and gas production, tax big polluters and help people install more energy efficient heating in their homes. The U.K. Met Office weather agency recorded 40.3 degrees Celsius (104.5 degrees Fahrenheit) in England on Tuesday, the highest ever temperature registered in a country that is ill-prepared for such extreme heat.
Will Power swept both poles for the IndyCar doubleheader at Iowa Speedway to move within one of Mario Andretti’s all-time record. Power dominated Saturday’s quirky qualifying session in which his first lap set his starting spot for the race later that afternoon. His second lap put him on the pole for Sunday’s race. Power has 66 poles for his career, and Andretti's record in 67. Scott Dixon tied Andretti last week for second on the all-time IndyCar wins list with Dixon’s 52nd career victory. Power has five more chances this season to snatch another Andretti mark.
Iraq's Foreign Ministry says it's filed a complaint to the U.N. Security Council, requesting an urgent session to discuss a deadly attack this week that Baghdad blames on Turkey. The ministry also says that Baghdad has recalled its chargé d’affaires from Ankara. Iraq’s parliament convened a session on Saturday to discuss Wednesday's attack in Iraq's northern, Kurdish-run region that killed nine people. Turkey says it's targeting Kurdish militants who have waged a decadeslong insurgency against Ankara but denied it was behind Wednesday's attack. The escalation threatens to further erode ties between the two countries.
A fast-moving wildfire near Yosemite National Park has exploded in size and prompted evacuations even as firefighters made progress against an earlier blaze that burned to the edge of a grove of giant sequoias. California fire officials said Oak Fire began Friday afternoon southwest of the park near Midpines in Mariposa County and by Saturday morning had spread across 10.2 square miles by Saturday morning. Fire officials called the blaze “explosive" and fueled by hot weather and bone dry vegetation. About 1,700 area residents were put under mandatory evacuation orders Friday night. Meanwhile, firefighters have made significant progress against another wildfire that began July 7 in Yosemite National Park and burned into the Sierra National Forest.
Greece’s fire service was fighting four major fires across the country, including one where they had to evacuate over 450 people from an island holiday resort. A fire that broke Saturday morning on the Greek island of Lesbos prompted authorities to call for the evacuation of the Vatera resort on the south side of the island. The fire came very close to the resort and at engulfed least one house. Another fire is threatening, for a third day in a row, a major nature reserve in Greece's northeast near the border with Turkey. Two more major fires were burning in the country's northwest and southwest.
