The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that the trial is underway for a man accused of fatally shooting a 7-year-old girl who was riding in a car with her family after a day of Christmas shopping in Atlanta. Fulton County prosecutor Pat Dutcher said in his opening statement on Friday that Kennedy Maxie was struck by gunfire after the defendant, Daquan Reed, was robbed of his cellphone and money outside the Phipps Plaza mall in Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood. Dutcher said an enraged Reed picked up a pistol and fired it from the rear passenger seat of a car. Reed’s attorney, Nicole Fegan, said though Kennedy’s death was “terrible,” her client was innocent.

LOS ANGELES — The woman whose Mar Vista home caught fire after Anne Heche crashed her car into it on Aug. 5 has spoken out about the actor's death.

COPENHAGEN, DENMARK (AP) - Results from Danish football:

Anne Heche’s organ recipients have been selected, and the actress is set to be removed from life support Sunday afternoon, according to a report.

One of the last remaining Navajo Code Talkers says Sunday that the code based on his then-unwritten native language was the hardest thing to learn. Thomas H. Begay spoke at a Phoenix ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the elite World War II group and its code that confounded Japanese military cryptologists. Hundreds of Navajos were recruited by the U.S. Marines to serve as code talkers during the war. The 98-year-old Begay is one of three who is still alive to talk about it. The Code Talkers participated in all assaults the Marines led in the Pacific from 1942 to 1945 including Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Peleliu and Iwo Jima.

At least 41 people were killed and about a dozen others hurt when a fire broke out at a church in greater Cairo, Egypt’s health ministry said.

ORLANDO, Fla. — The National Hurricane Center continues to keep its eye on a low pressure area located off the Texas coast.

British Open champion Cameron Smith and his chase for No. 1 in the world got a little tougher even before he teed off Sunday in the FedEx St. Jude Championship. The PGA Tour penalized Smith two shots upon learning he took a drop in the wrong place after hitting into the water on the par-3 fourth hole in the third round Saturday. Smith signed for a 67 and was two shots behind. A victory would take him to No. 1 in the world. With the penalty, his score was adjusted to a 69 and he started the final round four shots behind.

Sadio Mané had two goals ruled out through VAR but Bayern Munich still managed to beat Wolfsburg 2-0 in the Bundesliga. Mané thought he’d opened the scoring in the 19th minute and his celebrations were cut short again in the 75th after another lengthy VAR review. Jamal Musiala and Thomas Müller’s first-half goals were enough to maintain Bayern’s winning start and frustrate former coach Niko Kovac on his return to Munich. Kovac is now in charge of Wolfsburg. Mainz and Union Berlin canceled each other out in a 0-0 draw in Mainz.

The realignment in the major conferences could lead to fewer opportunities in the future for Group of Five teams to play those bigger schools. Cincinnati was the first G5 team to make the College Football Playoff last year when its undefeated regular season included road wins over Notre Dame and Indiana. But the games most G5 and FCS schools play against the Power Five teams are about the paycheck they get to help finance their programs. The SEC and Big Ten are both set to expand to at least 16 teams over the next few seasons. The other Power Five leagues also are going through transitions.

Anyone celebrating a birthday around the Tennessee Titans walks carefully around the team’s headquarters to try and avoid center Ben Jones. Jones likes to surprise people usually with a pie to the face. The veteran lineman helped coach Mike Vrabel celebrate his 47th birthday in style Sunday. Jones snuck up behind Vrabel as the coach talked with fans and signed autographs after practice. Jones doused Vrabel with baby powder before Vrabel was able to grab a towel.

An angler from suburban Washington, D.C., helped win a record prize at the annual White Marlin Open on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. Jeremy Duffie of Bethesda, Maryland, reeled in a 77.5-pound (35.2-kilogram) white marlin on Friday’s final day of the open while fishing on the Ocean City boat Billfisher. In all they earned more than $4.5 million. There were several other contest categories, including the blue marlin and tuna divisions. Those winners each won over $1.2 million. The top blue marlin was 511 pounds (232 kilograms) and the top tuna was 247.5 pounds (112 kilograms).

TAIPEI, Taiwan — A U.S. congressional delegation led by Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., landed in Taiwan Sunday for a two-day visit, a trip that risks keeping tensions with China high after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi went earlier this month.

An anti-abortion activist who heads a small hard-right Republican group said he’s offered to pay the expected $229,000 cost of a hand recount of votes from every Kansas county after a decisive statewide vote affirming abortion rights. Mark Gietzen, who leads the group Kansas Republican Assembly, told the Kansas City Star on Saturday he wants to pay for the recount that Melissa Leavitt, of Colby, requested because he believes it could change the outcome. The 165,000-vote difference in the election makes that unlikely, however. And there has been no evidence of significant problems with the election. The Kansas Republican Assembly is significantly to the right of the state Republican Party and isn’t affiliated with the GOP-led legislature.

A police officer in Louisiana is in critical condition after police say a suspect ran over him with a vehicle and dragged him during an attempted traffic stop. Police in Lafayette, Louisiana say the officer was dragged 100 feet early Sunday morning. Sgt. Robin Green says officers had tried to stop a car that was driving recklessly downtown around 1:30 a.m. Green said the driver sped away but ran into a roadblock before reversing and striking the officer. An officer shot at the car but no one was struck. The driver was arrested.

Antonio Conte and Thomas Tuchel were both sent off after clashing following the final whistle of a feisty 2-2 draw between Chelsea and Tottenham featuring an equalizer in the sixth minute of stoppage time by Spurs striker Harry Kane. As they shook hands on the field, Tuchel seemed to not let go of his grip and intimated that Conte look him in the eyes. Pushing and shoving ensued, just as there had been between the two managers in the technical area during the match at Stamford Bridge. They were then shown red cards. Conte celebrated Tottenham’s first equalizer by Pierre-Emile Højbjerg by barging into the chest of Tuchel, sparking a melee among the two sets of coaching staff.

On the eve of the anniversary of the Taliban takeover of Kabul, Afghanistan’s former president has defended what he says was a split-second decision to flee. Ashraf Ghani told CNN that he left while the Taliban were at the gates of the capital because he wanted to avoid the humiliation of surrender to the insurgents. Critics say Ghani’s sudden and secret departure on Aug. 15, 2021 left the city rudderless as U.S. and NATO forces were in the final stages of their chaotic withdrawal from the country. Ghani also denied persistent allegations that took tens of millions of dollars in cash with him as he and other officials fled.

CHICAGO — When Chicago-born R&B star R. Kelly walked out of the Cook County criminal courthouse a free man in 2008, it wasn’t just a stroke of luck.

The average U.S. price of regular-grade gasoline plummeted 45 cents over the past three weeks to $4.10 per gallon. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey says Sunday that the continued decline comes as crude oil costs also remain low. The average price at the pump is down a dollar over the past nine weeks, but it’s 85 cents higher than it was one year ago. Nationwide, the highest average price for regular-grade gas was in the San Francisco Bay Area, at $5.36 per gallon. The lowest average was in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at $3.38 per gallon.

Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco took on-field batting practice for the first time since being sidelined last month by a right hamate bone injury that required surgery. He says he will join Triple-A Durham on Tuesday to start a minor league rehab assignment. The switch-hitting Franco hit from both sides of the plate. He says the right side is not 100 percent because the wrist is a little weak due to the injury. Franco and injured outfielders Manuel Margot and Harold Ramirez are expected back this month for the playoff-contending Rays.

A Kentucky judge has been suspended with pay following testimony that he pressured a lawyer practicing in his court to support his reelection campaign. The Paducah Sun reports the Kentucky Judicial Conduct Commission voted 3-2 on Friday to suspend 42nd Judicial Circuit Judge Jamie Jameson. The daylong hearing included testimony from an attorney that Jameson repeatedly asked to support his reelection campaign. Jameson was also accused of unbecoming conduct. The panel viewed a number of videos showing Jameson’s courtroom demeanor and use of his contempt power. Jameson testified on his own behalf, at one point telling commissioners they were being used for political purposes.

Sunday studio estimates say the Brad Pitt action film “Bullet Train” led all movies in ticket sales for a second straight weekend. A quiet spell in theaters and incredible staying power allowed “Top Gun: Maverick” to rocket back into third place in its 12th week of release. “Bullet Train” pulled in $13.1 million in its second go-around. Three new films went into wide release but none cracked the top five films. It's an expected but still acute late-summer downturn in big releases that gave plenty of airspace for the year’s biggest movie, “Maverick,” to make another fly-by in theaters. It made $7.2 million, bringing its cumulative total to $673.8 million.

Maja Stark of Sweden captured her third title of the year on the Ladies European Tour. This one was the biggest. She shot 63 in the final round for a five-shot victory in the ISPS Handa World Invitational. It's co-sanctioned by the LPGA Tour. That means the former Oklahoma State star now can become an LPGA Tour member. The tournament was held at Galgorm Castle and Massereene in Northern Ireland. It was played concurrently with the European tour. The men played separately, but the tours competed for the same prize fund. The 22-year-old Swede won $225,000.

The United States women’s national hockey team took the ice to prepare for the world championships without new coach John Wroblewski. USA Hockey spokeswoman Melissa Katz says Wroblewski tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, and will coach the team remotely while spending a 10-day stretch in self-isolation. If he is cleared, Wroblewski would travel separately to join the team in Denmark. The team opens the 10-nation tournament against Japan on Aug. 25. The U.S. roster is led by Hilary Knight and Kendall Coyne Schofield, and has 18 players from the silver-medal Olympic team.

EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND (AP) - Results from Scotch football:

Gunfire and a subsequent explosion have left at least five people dead, 15 injured and several others missing, as well as damaging homes, in the Ecuadorian port city of Guayaquil. On its Twitter account, Ecuador’s Prosecutor’s Office said its agents were gathering evidence to establish the cause and motive for the attack in Guayaquil’s Cristo del Consuelo neighborhood. Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo tweeted that organized crime in Ecuador is now attacking with explosives. Sunday’s violence “is a declaration of war against the State. Either we unite to face it or the price will be even higher for society,” he wrote.

A major wildfire that ravaged pine forests in a tourist-beloved area of southwestern France has stopped expanding after rain fell overnight, and firefighters were working Sunday to tame it. An official in the Gironde region said 8,000 evacuated residents have been authorized to come back home. The fire in the Gironde and Landes regions has burned more than 74 square kilometers (29 square miles) since Tuesday. Firefighters from several European nations arrived in France on Friday to help battle the blaze. More than 232 square miles of forest has burned so far this year in France, more than any other year in the past decade.
