Rosemont, Illinois, November 30, 2021/PRNewswire/ - The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) for the first time held its national simulation program meeting at its newly established OMS Institute of Education and Innovation to improve Anesthesia safety in Rosemont, Illinois.

Thirty oral and maxillofacial surgeons (OMS) practiced key techniques for managing and monitoring office anesthesia during two Office Emergency Airway Management (OBEAM) module meetings during the first use of the central simulation laboratory in November.

The OBEAM module provides AAOMS members with the opportunity to improve mannequin technology until they meet best practice protocols when simulating various real-life emergency airway situations-without the risk of harming the patient. State-of-the-art technology enables participants to receive data-driven feedback immediately and identify areas that might benefit from additional training. The software will record the missed steps and trial time in each scene.

Through the standardization of the plan, all participants participate in the same simulation activities-allowing for a more objective assessment. The plan uses best practice principles similar to commercial aviation, using simulation to train pilots to deal with adverse events. In the master-based cooperative learning model, group cooperation is used to strengthen learning.

AAOMS Anesthesia Committee Chairman, OMS Deepak Krishnan of DDS and FACS said: “The combination of simulation training will help each AAOMS member update and maintain their airway rescue skills, effectively improving patient safety.” “OBEAM courses are designed for low Risk training is designed to provide high-risk results in office-based airway emergencies."

OBEAM is one of the three modules in the national simulation program, which can update participants’ knowledge and skills, inform new technologies and tools, and meet the needs of the OMS office anesthesia team. Other modules are Office-based Crisis Management (OBCM) and online sedation courses.

In the four-hour OBEAM module, participants reviewed and practiced the concepts and skills of sedation monitoring and supplemental oxygen techniques, opening the airway, using one-handed and two-handed techniques for balloon valve mask (BVM) ventilation, and laryngeal mask airway (LMA) ) Insert and use Airtraq laryngoscope for tracheal intubation (the process of inserting the tube into the trachea). Manipulate the ventilation parameters, so after mastering the BVM in the normal configuration, you can practice and master the difficult BVM.

To develop the simulation program, AAOMS consulted with Dr. John J. Schaefer III, MD, Professor of Anesthesiology at the Medical University of South Carolina, and Lewis Blackman Endowed Patient Simulation and Research Chair and CEO of Simulation Training Solutions, LLC. He is internationally recognized as one of the most important experts in the field of medical simulation and has played an important role in verifying the AAOMS national simulation program.

The program works with other AAOMS programs and resources to improve patient safety and member training and skills in anesthesia management and monitoring-including office anesthesia assessment manuals, dental anesthesia incident reporting systems, and certification requirements.

This module was previously held at the 2019 AAOMS Annual Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts and the 2021 AAOMS Annual Meeting in Nashville, Tennessee.

The OMS Institute of Education and Innovation has large classrooms, meeting rooms and simulation laboratories. It held its first event in March 2020 and plans to host other AAOMS conferences and conferences.
